Jinxed

Check out my interview with one of the leading ladies of Reverse Harem Romance novels, the lovely K B Ladnier.

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you first get into writing?
I’m 28 years old and have lived in south Mississippi. I’m a mom to a crazy little girl and slave to three cats. I’m also a cyborg pirate because I have a prosthetic leg. That’s always the funnest conversation starter. I’ve been writing stories most of my life. Though, none were nearly as complex as what I write now. Short stories and poems were my thing from middle school all the way into college.

If you didn’t write, ideally would you do for work?
I would probably try my hand at opening and running a coffee shop. Probably will still do that at some point in life and sell only self-published authors books. I think it would give it a uniqueness you don’t see everyday.

Does your family support your career as a writer?
Oh absolutely! My parents and siblings are all proud of me and what I’ve accomplished in my writing career in so little time. I’m not done yet though!

Is being a writer a gift or a curse?
It kind of depends. It’s a bit of both. It’s a gift because it’s literally sharing your soul with hundreds and sometimes thousands of people. They joy of seeing someone review your book, telling you how much they loved it, is the most rewarding feeling. I wouldn’t change it for anything. It’s also a curse though, because sometimes the characters I write become assholes and try to take over my life. Like why can’t I just relax in a bath? No. I gotta be thinking about how this character is going to get away with murder, or tell that hot guy or girl they love them, or remember to make them turn off the stove so I don’t burn down the house. It’s a nightmare. No one wants to be responsible for another life like that.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
Oh, the research can get weird…I once had to look up what a morgue calls the metal cubbies they stick the bodies in. Cold locker is the answer btw. Like if the government really does spy on what we type into google, chances are authors are on their top most wanted lists. We have to research some crazy stuff.

Tell me about your new release or WIP.
My newest release is a witchy paranormal reverse harem romance. It’s super ridiculous and all kinds of crazy fun. Like I’m pretty sure there’s no serious moments in this book whatsoever. I may start getting messages asking if I’m going to need therapy.

What was your hardest scene to write?
All of it. I’m not even gonna specify. To me, everything is both easy and hard to write.

Do your characters talk to you?
Is that rhetorical? Cause they never shut up. They’re so mean sometimes too.

Do you plot out your stories or do your character’s voices drive your storyline?
I mean I try to, but a lot of times it’s more like “oh shit! How’d that happen? Ok well I guess we’re going this direction. Didn’t see that coming!”

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?
That I need therapy.

What one thing would you give up if you could become a better writer?
My other leg. Maybe. No wait. Maybe a pinky. Do we need those? I mean, really?

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
This is another one of those where it’s a happy mix of both. *whispers* but really, it’s more exhausting than anything. Shhhh

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
Sometimes, but I try to avoid reading the bad. I don’t let the bad get to me. More often than not I laugh at them. My books won’t always be everyone’s cup of whiskey.

Do you Google yourself?
I’ve tried. Google just pops up with memes of people laughing and pointing.

What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I wouldn’t be an author period without them. I value them so dearly. To me, they’re extended family.

Does a big ego help or hurt writers?
Oh, it hurts them. No one likes a big head. I’ve seen authors burn bridges faster than they can build them by thinking they’re better than everyone else. That’s not the way this industry is supposed to work. We’re supposed to support each other and build bridges together then walk across them arms linked together in solidarity.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
Probably one of my favorite authors Amy Bartol. She’s AMAZING and seriously such a sweet person. I look up to her in the highest regards and just chatting with her is a privilege.

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they inspire you to become a better writer?
Most of my closest friends are authors and they’re some of the most supportive and beautiful people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. They push me to keep going when I’m stuck, and I’d be nowhere near as good of an author without them.

Read any good books lately?
Have I ever!! I’ve been obsessing over Bea Paige’s Brothers Freed series. IN LOVE with her characters and her storyline is just fantastic. I couldn’t put them down.

Do you ever sleep?
Between my five-year-old and writing… nope. What is sleep?

What is your ideal harem? Slow burn or give it to me now baby?
It depends on my mood. I’m NOT a fan of insta-love or insta-sex. It drives me insane when a heroine meets a love interest and immediately sexes him up. I can’t stomach it.

Care to share the love and give a shout out to another Queen of RH?
There’s a few actually  Nichole Riley, Anita Maxwell, N.K. Stackhouse, Amara Kent, Brandy Slaven, Stacy Jones, Cece Rose, and A.K. Koonce are some of the most amazing ladies! I have the privilege of calling them friends, writing with them, and reading their work. They are all so extremely talented and would highly suggest EVERYONE check out their books!

I hope you enjoyed the interview.

K.B. Ladnier is from a small city in Southern Mississippi. She has one daughter and three cats who she claims are stealing her soul in only tiny doses so she won’t notice. She is a cyborg and spends most of her time hiding from her tiny human so she doesn’t have to share her snacks as she reads her favorite books. She hates the beach yet lives only ten minutes away from it and daydreams of mountains and snow. She plans to write as long as people continue loving what she does, otherwise she’s going to say screw it and do her second dream of owning a coffee shop. Though, she may still do both. I had the pleasure to ask the lovely Crystal Ash some questions and her answers are fascinating.

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you first get into writing?
I was obsessed with reading since I was a kid. At 7-8 years old I was devouring RL Stine books like nobody’s business. As a teenager I found a paranormal romance book written and published by a girl who was also 13-14 (In the Forest of the Night by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes). I was amazed by that and inspired to write my own stories. Writing has been part of me ever since.

If you didn’t write, ideally would you do for work?
I love animals and volunteer with them whenever I can. So I’d probably work with some kind of animal rescue.

Does your family support your career as a writer?
Yes, thankfully! They don’t know exactly what I write though, haha. I think part of my writing obsession came from my dad. He’s always reading and journaling, and he’s published some poetry and non-fiction too. He’s super proud of me but again, I think he would die if he knew I was writing reverse harem!

Is being a writer a gift or a curse?
It’s absolutely a gift, I can’t see it being anything but! I don’t see it as some special talent though that only certain people have. Anyone can be a writer, it’s a skill you practice like anything else.

What was an early experience where you learned that words had power?
Oh, I learned this very early on! The first books I devoured were R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps. I’d have trouble sleeping because those books scared me so much and yet I couldn’t get enough of them.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want, write to market so to speak? What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
I try to make it a balance of both and that is what I feel is the hardest thing: giving readers what they want without compromising on my artistic voice. But usually I also want what the readers want, for the characters to be happy and in love after overcoming obstacles. Taking readers along that journey is where it’s fun to get creative!

Tell me about your new release or WIP.
My newest release is Witch’s Betrayal, book 3 of The Unholy Trinity series. I’m super excited for this release because this where the action and intensity really picks up in the series. My main character Deja learns hard lessons about who she can rely on and who wants to stab her in the back.
I recently finished the first draft of book 4, Witch’s Exile, which is now with beta readers. I’m currently writing the 5th and final Unholy Trinity book, Witch’s Rebirth
.

What was your hardest scene to write?
The scene at the end of Witch’s Exile. Sorry, not gonna spoil it!

Do your characters talk to you?
Absolutely! They are too stubborn for their own good, sometimes.

Do you plot out your stories or do your character’s voices drive your storyline?
A bit of both. I plot out the general story line and events that I feel need to happen, and my character’s voices fill in the details. Occasionally a character changes the whole plan, but so far that has only improved the story.

What character in your book is least likely to get along with you?
Probably Sal. I generally don’t get along with hotheads or super aggressive, protective people. I would tell him to take a chill pill and he would just get even more angry, haha.

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?
Not very nice things, probably! I’ve put her through some very tough ordeals. But I’ve also given her hot sex scenes and loads of orgasms so she can’t get too mad.

What one thing would you give up if you could become a better writer?
I’m not sure. I think just continuing to write and read makes you a better writer. You don’t need to give up anything, just keep working at it.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
It exhausts me but in a good way! It’s like a really satisfying workout. You put the work in even if you might not feel like doing it, and come out feeling totally spent but satisfied that you got it done.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I do, I have too much morbid curiosity. The good ones make my whole week! The bad ones I don’t take too seriously. Sometimes their feedback can be useful, but most of the time you just have to shrug it off and move on.

What’s the best way to market your books?
Connecting with readers and treating them like people. I try to answer every email or message I get from readers because it means a lot to interact with an author whose books you love. Treat your readers awesomely and you’ll have fans for life.

What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! I wouldn’t be able to support myself on writing if it wasn’t for them!

Read any good books lately?
Rise of the Iliri by Auryn Hadley is one of my favorite RH series, hands down. I also just started reading the Veil Diaries (I know, late to the party) and love it so far!

Do you ever sleep?
Definitely! I love to sleep. I definitely sleep more than I write, haha.

What is your ideal harem? Slow burn or give it to me now baby?
Medium-ish burn. I love watching the sexual tension build up between the characters. The “give it to me now baby” is so much hotter when they work for it.

Crystal loves all things mysterious and unusual, so naturally she loves paranormal, fantasy and reverse harem romance! You’ll find a mixture of all these elements in her books.
When she is not writing, you can find her mixing various tea and alcohol concoctions (sometimes successfully!), cooing at cute reptiles, or reading one of the thousands of books on her Kindle.
