Queens of RH: Alexia Purdy Interview

Cursed Labyrinth on Amazon

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you first get into writing?
I first got into writing when I was small, maybe five? I made up stories a lot and loved story time in my kindergarten class. I think my poor eyesight and not wearing my eyeglasses contributed to it a lot since I couldn’t see well and refused to wear my glasses, so I kept to activities I could do that I could see, mainly reading and writing.

If you didn’t write, ideally would you do for work?
I am also a registered nurse too and though I love some aspects of the job, I don’t want to do it anymore. Honestly, all I ever wanted to do was be a writer and it’s all I want to do for the rest of my life.

Is being a writer a gift or a curse?
It’s more of a curse but in a good way. I write stories because I have to, not because I want to but, in the end, I end up wanting to do it so it’s kind of a good thing. I just wish sometimes the words would come easier.

What was an early experience where you learned that words had power?
It was in first grade. I refused to speak, and the school officials thought I probably couldn’t speak English. I’m bilingual with Spanish and English and I understood and could speak English very well. After they discovered that wasn’t the issue, they asked me why I didn’t want to speak in class and I pointed to my first-grade teacher and said, “Because I don’t like her.” That ended the battle with trying to make me speak in her class.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want, write to market so to speak? What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
I write what I want and sometimes it’s to market, sometimes it isn’t. My artistic process is quite volatile. It can flow easily for one book and just face plant on the next one and fight me the whole way through. I usually percolate stories in my head before I even start. Sometimes, I start without an ending in mind. Usually, the ending comes to me while I’m still writing which can be frustrating, annoying, and yet a blessing all at the same time.

Tell me about your new release or WIP.
My newest book coming out June 25th 2018 is The Cursed Labyrinth. It’s book 2 of my Accursed Archangels series and has the main character, a wraith angel who is caught between two realms of Earth fighting to gain access to heaven. Along the way, she meets friends she cherishes and challenges that will push her to the edge and back. It’s been a challenging story so far to write but has also pushed me harder than any other book as well.

What was your hardest scene to write?
The beginning of the book deals with a horrific mutilation scene. It was hard to put a character through the trauma and I nearly didn’t write it but the thing with books is you must have conflict, extreme conflicts that jolt the readers at times to keep them vested so I chose to keep the scene. My poor characters.

Do your characters talk to you?
Yes. They used to talk a lot to me, now, I see their stories like a movie in my head instead. It’s odd but sometimes, they still talk to me but it’s rare.
Do you plot out your stories or do your character’s voices drive your storyline?
What one thing would you give up if you could become a better writer?
I’d give up bacon. I like it but I don’t love it.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
It can do both. Most days I’m exhausted mentally but jittery physically. Other times, I can’t sleep from the stuff running through my head that I want to write and it doesn’t help if I just keep lying down, I have to get up and write it.

What is your writing Kryptonite?
Facebook. It’s distracting yet it’s a huge integral part of my business. I can’t avoid it, and I love it. It’s so entertaining and the stories I find are amazing. It’s hard to untangle Facebook from my business in lots of ways. I sell on there, I post on there, I spend free time on there, I connect with friends on there and I learn on there. It’s crazy but it’s a huge part of my world. It’s hard to exit from the browser and just write straight through. In a way, Facebook gives me a mental break when I need it to get back to my writing but if I let it go too far, hours later, I’ve wasted time. Double edged sword.

What’s the best way to market your books?
Jump into the reader trenches. Be a reader yourself. That’s all I can say. Learn how readers think and you might find out how they buy. That and grow your newsletter. It’s the only thing that’s truly yours and truly worth anything.
How many hours a day to you spend writing verses marketing your books?
I spend about an hour on marketing a day and writing I spend about 2-4 hours. Some days it’s 6-8 hrs., but that’s rare.

What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything. They keep me going or I’d give this up so easily. I can’t count how many times their kind words about my stories meaning something to them, whether if they helped them escape or just gave them enjoyment, this keeps me going. I love my readers, no other way to put it.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?
Not researching the publishing world. It keeps changing. Make sure you’re keeping up with it, especially if you’re going to self-publish. Even the Traditional world is changing so keep at it.

Do you ever sleep?
I sleep too much. I used to live on four hours of sleep a day and now, since I was diagnosed with Diabetes, I must sleep 8-10 hours a day and I’m always tired. It sucks but I have become more productive in the hours I am awake than I used to be.

What is your ideal harem? Slow burn or give it to me now baby?
I love the slow burn ones. I’m odd that I could enjoy a sexy read with no sex scenes but the tension, oh yes, it must have tons of angst and tension in it. That’s probably just me though.

Care to share the love and give a shout out to another Queen of RH?
I’d have to point out Scarlett Dawn, and May Sage. Those ladies are cyborgs and I absolutely adore them and their books.

Held by Magic

I helped the Four Horsemen save the world. Now I’m fighting for my life.
The only people who can help me are three powerful and seductive guys who don’t belong in this world–and the Horsemen want them dead.

After the almost-apocalypse, my life as an untrustworthy, half-demon thief returned to normal. But everything changed when my latest job ended in disaster. I’m now cursed with a death mark and, if I don’t find the cure soon, I’m facing life under the control of a demon prince.

Not only that, but three sexy and dangerous supernatural guys have also tracked me down. Powerful but seductive elemental, Cillian. Sharp and guarded wizard, Morgan. Their mysterious and passionate companion, Dex. They need my skills to locate a dangerous magic item, and in return, they’ll help find a cure for my mark. We strike a deal: I’ll help the guys find their precious box if they protect and help me.

Now we’re being pursued by demons, I’m fending off my fae ex-lover, and we’re all trying to stay alive. Even worse, I’m all out of whisky.

And did I mention whoever possesses the dangerous box and its secrets could change the world? I hope this isn’t another apocalypse situation, because I’ve seriously had enough of those this year.

Held by Magic is the first full-length novel in a slow-burn reverse harem urban fantasy series. If you love fast-paced supernatural action, magic, adventure and romance, all led by a kickass heroine with a very British sense of humour, scroll up and one click this book.

This series is set in the world of LJ Swallow’s The Four Horsemen series. However, the storylines and main characters are different, and each series can be read as a standalone.

LJ Swallow is a USA Today bestselling author and alter-ego of bestselling contemporary romance author Lisa Swallow.
Giving in to her dark side, LJ spends time creating worlds filled with supernatural creatures who don’t fit the norm, and heroines who are more likely to kick ass than sit on theirs.

Pandora’s Pain

Regret can last a life time.
For Pandora, it’s lasted an eternity.
The gods offer her a chance at freedom for the first time since she opened her little box. All she has to do is collect three of the greatest sins of the world and she will be forgiven.
She didn’t expect the world to have changed so much without her.
She didn’t expect the sins to be three sinfully sexy men either.
She certainly didn’t expect it to be so hard to steal away their life.
But perhaps that is the price she has to pay for forgiveness.

Queens of RH: Crystal Ash Interview

Witch’s Dawn
Witch’s Rite
Witch’s Betrayal

I had the pleasure to ask the lovely Crystal Ash some questions and her answers are fascinating.

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you first get into writing?
I was obsessed with reading since I was a kid. At 7-8 years old I was devouring RL Stine books like nobody’s business. As a teenager I found a paranormal romance book written and published by a girl who was also 13-14 (In the Forest of the Night by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes). I was amazed by that and inspired to write my own stories. Writing has been part of me ever since.

If you didn’t write, ideally would you do for work?
I love animals and volunteer with them whenever I can. So I’d probably work with some kind of animal rescue.

Does your family support your career as a writer?
Yes, thankfully! They don’t know exactly what I write though, haha. I think part of my writing obsession came from my dad. He’s always reading and journaling, and he’s published some poetry and non-fiction too. He’s super proud of me but again, I think he would die if he knew I was writing reverse harem!

Is being a writer a gift or a curse?
It’s absolutely a gift, I can’t see it being anything but! I don’t see it as some special talent though that only certain people have. Anyone can be a writer, it’s a skill you practice like anything else.

What was an early experience where you learned that words had power?
Oh, I learned this very early on! The first books I devoured were R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps. I’d have trouble sleeping because those books scared me so much and yet I couldn’t get enough of them.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want, write to market so to speak? What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
I try to make it a balance of both and that is what I feel is the hardest thing: giving readers what they want without compromising on my artistic voice. But usually I also want what the readers want, for the characters to be happy and in love after overcoming obstacles. Taking readers along that journey is where it’s fun to get creative!

Tell me about your new release or WIP.
My newest release is Witch’s Betrayal, book 3 of The Unholy Trinity series. I’m super excited for this release because this where the action and intensity really picks up in the series. My main character Deja learns hard lessons about who she can rely on and who wants to stab her in the back.
I recently finished the first draft of book 4, Witch’s Exile, which is now with beta readers. I’m currently writing the 5th and final Unholy Trinity book, Witch’s Rebirth
.

What was your hardest scene to write?
The scene at the end of Witch’s Exile. Sorry, not gonna spoil it!

Do your characters talk to you?
Absolutely! They are too stubborn for their own good, sometimes.

Do you plot out your stories or do your character’s voices drive your storyline?
A bit of both. I plot out the general story line and events that I feel need to happen, and my character’s voices fill in the details. Occasionally a character changes the whole plan, but so far that has only improved the story.

What character in your book is least likely to get along with you?
Probably Sal. I generally don’t get along with hotheads or super aggressive, protective people. I would tell him to take a chill pill and he would just get even more angry, haha.

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?
Not very nice things, probably! I’ve put her through some very tough ordeals. But I’ve also given her hot sex scenes and loads of orgasms so she can’t get too mad.

What one thing would you give up if you could become a better writer?
I’m not sure. I think just continuing to write and read makes you a better writer. You don’t need to give up anything, just keep working at it.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
It exhausts me but in a good way! It’s like a really satisfying workout. You put the work in even if you might not feel like doing it, and come out feeling totally spent but satisfied that you got it done.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I do, I have too much morbid curiosity. The good ones make my whole week! The bad ones I don’t take too seriously. Sometimes their feedback can be useful, but most of the time you just have to shrug it off and move on.

What’s the best way to market your books?
Connecting with readers and treating them like people. I try to answer every email or message I get from readers because it means a lot to interact with an author whose books you love. Treat your readers awesomely and you’ll have fans for life.

What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! I wouldn’t be able to support myself on writing if it wasn’t for them!

Read any good books lately?
Rise of the Iliri by Auryn Hadley is one of my favorite RH series, hands down. I also just started reading the Veil Diaries (I know, late to the party) and love it so far!

Do you ever sleep?
Definitely! I love to sleep. I definitely sleep more than I write, haha.

What is your ideal harem? Slow burn or give it to me now baby?
Medium-ish burn. I love watching the sexual tension build up between the characters. The “give it to me now baby” is so much hotter when they work for it.

Crystal loves all things mysterious and unusual, so naturally she loves paranormal, fantasy and reverse harem romance! You’ll find a mixture of all these elements in her books.
When she is not writing, you can find her mixing various tea and alcohol concoctions (sometimes successfully!), cooing at cute reptiles, or reading one of the thousands of books on her Kindle.
