Tell us a little about yourself. How did you first get into writing?
I first started writing after my husband suggested I join a local writers club for a little stress relief. I’d been an avid reader all my life and wanted something more than the stress of working full time and being a Mum.

If you didn’t write, ideally would you do for work?
Oh, that’s a tough one. I’d probably go back to University and study law, or forensics. I gave up a middle managements job to pursue my love of writing, so there’s no way in hell I was going back to that.

Does your family support your career as a writer?
Yes, thank goodness. I’m very lucky to be able to do what I love and my husband is my biggest support.

Is being a writer a gift or a curse?
Both, at the same time. I think it depends on where I am with the current work in progress, and how easy the words are flowing.

What was an early experience where you learned that words had power?
Not a nice one, but I was teased a lot at school. Growing up in a small rural town in west New South Wales was tough at best, so I leaned from an early age how cruel words could be.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want, write to market so to speak? What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
I try to find a balance. I read what they want or would like in a book and then I try to find something original and exciting that excites me both as a reader and a writer. I want to be able to sit back after I typed the end and say to myself. “Fuck yeah, I’d read the Hell out of that book.”

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
It really depends on what book it is and my characters. I’ve done days and weeks of research for genetic programming, cutting and re-combining DNA for one of my Zodiac Dragon books, I’ve also watched so many damn sniper videos on You Tube I can almost tell you what rifle and caliber rounds were used for another of my Zodiac Dragon books. So, it really depends on the characters themselves.

Tell me about your new release or WIP.
I’m currently writing Hell is a Harem book 2. It’s a dark, gritty Urban Fantasy story with the most kickass characters. Lorn, my main character is going through some family troubles

What was your hardest scene to write?
The end scene actually. I really loved this book and even though it took me a little bit to get into it, I didn’t want it to end.

Do your characters talk to you?
Not so much talk to me but scenes play out in my head as though it is me. I get the emotion and the view of it in 3D.

Do you plot out your stories or do your character’s voices drive your storyline?
Sometimes a loose plot after I’ve written the blurb, and have the right tone for the story. I might jot down some scenes. Write out the ending, which I always know and pivotal things I need to incorporate, especially if I’m writing the book as a continuation, or meant to be read in conjunction with the next book. Then I just let the story flow. I pretty well always hit what I need to hit, or if I don’t it’s always better than my first idea anyway.

What character in your book is least likely to get along with you?
Probably Alma, Lorn’s Grandmother, cause she has her own path and is doing her own thing. She doesn’t like people poking their nose into her business.

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?
Do not mess with her. She will fuck us up…lol.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
Nah, I’m pretty well an open book.

What one thing would you give up if you could become a better writer?
Social Media. It’s really exhausting and I find it hard to be ‘Kim the author’ all the time. By nature, I’m pretty quiet and a loner.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Both in equal measures, depending on what part of the book I’m writing.

What is your writing Kryptonite?
Lack of sleep. I need lots of it or my brain doesn’t brain so good.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I do for the first day or so, and then I stop. I get upset, as any human does and then I look at what they didn’t like. Most of the time they didn’t like my writing style, and even though I take steps to make it smoother and easier to read by hiring new editors, ultimately it’s just how I write, so I can’t fix that.

Do you Google yourself?
God no. That shit’s embarrassing.

What’s the best way to market your books?
Word of mouth and working with other authors.

How many hours a day to you spend writing verses marketing your books?
I usually spend a solid 8 hours writing, sometimes 2-3 hours a day marketing.

What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything to me. I so appreciate, and never take for granted that someone wants to read something I created. Every day they are the first one’s I tell the universe that I’m grateful for.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?
Not to do the work, not to learn the craft. It’s easy to be an author now days, not so easy to be a storyteller, that shit is hard, and it’s supposed to be hard.
Read a lot, and not just the words, the magic, pull it apart, find out what went into making it so, and then apply it to your own work.
